Girl's Junior Varsity Soccer wins Tournament!

Game Date
Mar 24, 2018

Saturday, both the Varsity and JV teams hosted tournaments for teams from the West Michigan area.  This was the first year that the Junior Varsity team hosted their own tournament.  Allendale faced off against Hopkins, Allegan, and Greenville over the course of the day on Saturday.

The first game kicked off at 10am, with Allendale facing off against Hopkins.  For the first 20 minutes of the game, the two teams battled, with Allendale controlling posession, but being unable to capitalize on their chances.  Finally, with 10 minutes left in the half, Kennadi Fuller received a ball from Kristen Maycroft, and was able to slide it past the opposing keeper for the first goal of the tournament.  The score at half was 1-0 in favor of the falcons.  In the second half, the Falcons earned a corner kick on the first possession, and Anna Koning scored her first goal of the season off the corner kick.  The game would end with the Falcons on top 2-0.  Allegan and Greenville tied their first game.

In the next fixture, Allendale faced off against a physically stronger team in Allegan.  The Falcons paid no mind to the size difference, as only 20 seconds into the game, Kennadi fuller stole the ball, and netted the first goal of the match only 24 seconds into the game.  7 minutes later, Anna Koning found Avery Terpstra off a throw in deep in Allegan's end, which Terpstra shot into the side netting, putting the falcons up 2-0.  The final goal of the game came again as a result of Anna Koning in the corner, as she found Terpstra AGAIN to put the Falcons up 3-0.  Allegan played a stout defensive second half, holding the final score to 3-0 in favor of Allendale.  Greenville def. Hopkins in their second match.

As the final game began, Allendale needed a win or a draw to take home the tournament title, while Greenville needed a win vs. Allendale.  In what was the closest match for Allendale in the tournament, the Falcons relied on their defense for a majority of the game.  The defense, led by captain Autumn Post, and goalkeeper Hadley Detter had been solid all day, not allowing any goals against.  Greenville forced the Falcons to trust in their defense, as Greenville attacked time and time again, only to be rebuffed by the resolute defense.  With a score of 0-0 at half, and both sides tired and injured from the previous 2 games, Avery Terpstra finally was able to make a breakthrough, scoring her third goal of the tournament on an assist from Justina Fellicioni.  Allendale held off Greenville for the final 25 minutes, to win the match 1-0.  Allegan def. Hopkins in their third and final match.

In the first ever JV tournament, the Falcons held each opponent scoreless, while relying on a very deep bench to provide support in a long day of soccer.  The Falcons have the next two weeks off due to spring break, and will use the time to train and hone their play before beginning their conference season @ Spring Lake on Wednesday, April 11th.
