The Falcons, seeking to extend their success after winning the Falcon Invitational this past weekend, came into their last game before break with enthusiasm and in the first half of the game, the energy showed. Extremely early in the game, setting the tone, Avery Terpstra found Brielle Joslyn who slotted the ball inside the near post, putting the Falcons up 1-0 early. It wasn't long after that when Rehema Sango took advantage of a poor pass to beat the keeper 1 on 1, earning an unassisted goal. The Falcons continued pressuring, and Lauren Butterfield hit the space between the defenders and found a running Avery Terpstra who put the ball in the back of the net. In the blink of an eye, the Falcons were leading 3-0. Continuing the pressure, and taking more than 10 shots in the first half, Brielle scored a second brace from the right side of the box, and Lauren Butterfield netted her first goal of the season. Rehema Sango found the back of the net one more time in the first half. The team entered the halftime break up 6-0.
While the first half had been about finding players, and putting the ball on frame, a change in formation encouraged ball movement and connecting passes. While the Falcons were unable to score in the second half, they had the opportunities and many chances were near misses. Black River was able to net two in the second half, one on a shot, and the other on a Penalty Kick.
The final score of the game was 6-2 in favor of the Falcons, a resounding win, and one that will continue to build confidence as the team has a couple of training sessions before Spring Break, which will be key in resting the players who are injured, so the team can return to full strength.
